The Biggest Russian Library in Haifa

    pic 26/06/2024
In Haifa, there has been a large library for several decades. Its collection consists only of books in Russian, and it is located on the fourth floor of the “Beit Oleh” building in Haifa at 20 Yud Lamed Peretz Street. We are talking with the head librarian of the library, Raisa Katz.– I know you have been managing the library for 4 years. Tell us about the library today, considering that many have long since moved online and haven’t touched a book in years. How does your library differ from other city libraries?

    – First of all, it’s the attitude towards the readers. The library has not lost its relevance today. We are in a rather unhealthy period, tough times. In such conditions, people seek to distract themselves or temporarily escape reality. It’s a celebration for the soul when you come home and a fascinating book is waiting for you. All problems are then set aside. Books are in demand, especially among people of different ages. A book is eternal and will never lose its relevance.

I haven’t lost my readers. Their numbers are growing. New people come, get memberships, even annual ones, and happily take books. The younger generation has less free time, so parents come and take books for them. Grandmothers take children’s books for their grandchildren. They don’t want the language to be lost. After all, language is the connection between generations. Many readers just come to chat, to talk about themselves, their families, their health. Sometimes I share about my family, my problems, and this brings us closer. I love my readers. When I came for an interview and was asked what motivated me to become a librarian, I answered, “Love for people.”

    – What are the interests of today’s readers, which books are in the greatest demand?

    – Generally, it’s family novels, family sagas, and detective stories. Moreover, there are many wonderful new names. We’re talking about detective thrillers that psychologically make a person think, not just flip through and forget. There’s a strong interest in memoirs and biographies. Readers don’t focus on just one thing. They are interested in history and politics.

    – As far as I know, you have a lot of books by Israeli authors, books about the history of Israel and the Jewish people, and about Judaism. Moreover, they are located at the entrance to the library…

    – They are always upfront. I immediately direct readers to what concerns our customs, traditions, and Judaism. I have selected literature that pertains to Jewish holidays. People come to Israel and are unfamiliar with many things. Perhaps many didn’t even know they had a connection to this country. It is books that can help them create a connection with Israel and the Jewish people. This is why the library conducts important activities.

For example, on Jerusalem Day, I selected books dedicated to our capital. I also select books for all significant dates and holidays.

    – Most city libraries in Haifa have sections with books in Russian. Your library has the largest collection of such books. Does the Absorption Administration allocate funds for updating the collection?

    – Of course, regularly. Every year the library’s collection is expanded and updated. Moreover, new arrivals are displayed on a special shelf, and many readers start their visit there. Naturally, I try to read the new books myself so I can later recommend them to readers. I’m always happy to meet our regular and new readers! Come to our library!
