    Neve Sha’anan, Yizre’eliyya

Covering 3.26 sq. km. it constitutes 5.1% of Haifa’s area. Its 38,070 residents make up 13.7% of the city’s population. At the center of this district lies the old Neve Sha’anan neighborhood established in the 1920’s. The population in this district is varied; Jews and Arabs, new immigrants and native-born, religious and secular. Because of the proximity to the Technion and the University of Haifa, some of the academic staff, employees and students live in this area. There are three neighborhoods in this district; Mordot Neve Sha’anan, Neve Sha’anan and Yizre’eliya.

Mordot Neve Sha’anan (Neve Sha’anan slopes) has a population of 16,600 people, 45% of which are Olim. Halisa and Tel Amal are neighborhoods established before the establishment of the State of Israel along the route up from the Lower Town area to Neve Sha’anan. Today Halisa houses mainly Muslim Arabs and Tel Amal mainly new immigrants from the former Soviet Republics. Neve Yossef was established around the birth of the State of Israel as a housing project for demobilized soldiers from the Jewish Brigade who fought with the allies in World War II. Neve Paz was built in the early 1970’s and absorbed many new immigrants in the 1990’s. Towards the end of the 1980’s, new projects were built on the northern slopes of the Carmel, housing mainly young families.

Neve Sha’anan has 12,300 people living within its borders. The establishment of the Technion campus in the 1950’s close to Neve Sha’anan boosted the development and growth of the neighborhood. Following the waves of Aliya in the 1960’s and 70’s the neighborhood developed towards the Carmel ridge and taller buildings (4-7 stories) and high-rises were built. This neighborhood has a relatively high percentage of religious families, living in harmony with the secular population. This is also an area with a large English-speaking population, many of them affiliated with the Technion. Many new immigrants have made their home in Neve Sha’anan.
