The Haifa Association for Immigrants Absorption warns: there has been an increase in fraud cases primarily targeting elderly Russian-speaking individuals. Eight suspects have already been detained, but the scams continue!
Scam scheme:
Fraudsters call by phone, pretend to be a relative, and claim that they are in trouble and urgently need money. They then send a courier to collect the cash directly from the victim’s home.
Example of an incident that occurred yesterday:
At 21:20, a 91-year-old woman received a call. The voice on the phone mimicked her daughter’s voice and urgently asked for financial help. A few minutes later, a “courier” arrived at her home and took 40,000 shekels!
How to avoid falling for the scam:
- Don’t panic! If a call makes you anxious, stop and think.
- Verify the information! Call your relative directly and check the situation.
- Do not give money to strangers! Relatives do not send couriers for money.
- Report to the police! At the slightest suspicion, call 100.
Inform your loved ones, especially elderly relatives and friends. Being warned means being protected!
