Brief guide to exchanging a license in Israel

1. Depending on experience (categories A and B):
   • Less than 3 years: Full training required (theory + test).
   • From 3 to 5 years: Only need to pass the practical “driving test” (a few lessons with an instructor + exam).
   • More than 5 years (for new immigrants): Exempt from exams. You can simply exchange your license.

   Important: Be sure to tell the clerk if you need to confirm category “A” (motorcycle) as well.

   Categories C and D: Always require lessons and exams.

2. Step-by-step plan:
   1. Optics (“Tofes Yarok”): Go to an accredited optician, have your eyesight checked and take a photo. The data will be sent to the Ministry of Transport (50–70 shekels).
   2. Appointment: Book a visit to the Ministry of Transport via the GoVisit app.
   3. Visit: Bring with you: Teudat Zehut, Teudat Oleh, original license, and a bank card.

      Note: If your plastic license was issued recently (less than 5 years ago), they may require a translation and notarization to confirm your actual driving experience.

   4. Payment: At the Ministry of Transport, you will receive a paper receipt. Pay it at the post office (412–550 shekels). The payment stamp makes this paper your temporary license.
3. Receiving the plastic license:
   • The license will arrive in your mailbox at your registered address (within 1–3 months).
   • MANDATORY: Place a clear sticker with your name (in Hebrew/English) and apartment number on your mailbox.
   • If the license does not arrive within 3 months: Go to the post office and order a “Kefel Rishayon” (duplicate) for ~27 shekels.
