Haifa is home to two outstanding academic institutions – Technion – Israel Institute of Technology and the University of Haifa.
The presence of two such distinguished universities is apparent in the city with its student population of close to 30,000 and tens of thousands of academics, researchers and administrative personnel who enhance Haifa’s cultural and intellectual tone.
These two institutions are also leading sources of employment and business.
Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, is Israel’s oldest university, founded in 1924. It is Israel’s training ground for engineers, scientists, doctors and architects and a site of advanced research and learning. As Israel’s largest and leading scientific-technological university and one of the leading centers of research in the world, it is the powerhouse behind Israel’s progress.
Many English-speaking olim are employed by the institution in all its divisions. The Technion has a wide range of outreach programs that promote science and technology for young people. These include science contests for high school students and summer science programs that attract gifted youngsters from around the world, as well as programs helping to bridge socio-economic gaps within Israel’s society.
The Technion also has an American Medical Students Program affiliated with its Faculty of Medicine and Rambam Medical Center.

The University of Haifa was established in 1963 under the joint auspices of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Haifa Municipality, and was accredited as a separate institution in 1972.
