The Haifa Municipality is at an advanced stage of creating a new municipal police unit, “Oz”. Recruitment of inspectors and other staff is currently underway, as well as the procurement of specialized equipment.
The purpose of establishing “Oz” is to significantly strengthen the personal safety of Haifa residents and to improve prevention and law enforcement in the urban environment regarding quality of life, violence, and offenses.
The unit will begin operations in January 2026. In the first stage, it will include about 20 municipal inspectors and 20 police officers, and by July 2026, their number will grow to 80. Details about the recruitment process are available on the Haifa Municipality website.
The unit will operate throughout the city, with a focus on “hotspots” determined jointly by the mayor and the commander of the Haifa police station. Activities will include foot and mobile patrols, as well as targeted operations based on residents’ requests and local situations.
Inspectors will undergo professional training, including first aid, firearms, and joint exercises with the Israel Police. They will be authorized to perform almost all actions available to police officers: detaining suspects, interrogation, search, and, if necessary, arrest.
The unit’s base will be located at 21 Yaffo Street, in the Lower City. Inspectors will wear gray uniforms with the unit’s emblem.
With the creation of “Oz”, Haifa joins the ranks of cities with a municipal patrol system. The unit will work closely with the Haifa Police, the municipal inspection, and the mayor’s operations center, providing round-the-clock response to residents’ requests.
