This week, a new learning cycle began in three ulpans of the Haifa Association for Immigrants Absorption. The newcomers were welcomed with special warmth. The Chairman of the Association and City Council member Kirill Karetnik greeted the new students and shared personal memories of his journey in Israel as a new immigrant and a lone soldier.“Every time I enter the ulpan and meet the eyes of those who have just arrived, I go back in time — to the moment when I was in their place. A new immigrant, knowing no one, trying to understand what a ‘past tense verb’ is. Today I stand before them as the chairman of the department — and this is a great honor,” said Karetnik. The event took place on the eve of Shavuot holiday, and Karetnik wished the immigrants a successful start to their studies, smooth absorption, and successful integration in Israel. “Hebrew will come, but what’s more important is knowing that you have a home, support, and foundation here,” he emphasized.
According to Karetnik, the three ulpans currently operating within the Integration Department in Haifa are considered among the most high-quality and professional in the country and serve as an example of successful integration. “I am proud of our teachers, our approach, and especially that we’re not just teaching the language here — we’re creating a sense of belonging.”
Karetnik also noted that new immigrants are not just part of society, but its most valuable asset and the future of the city. “Our country was built by waves of aliyah, and it’s our duty to surround those who are just beginning a new life here with care. We are beside them — at every step,” he concluded.
